5 Tips for a Healthy Retirement in Thailand

Thailand is one of the top tourist destinations in the world, yet the Land of Smiles is also a magnet for retired people and there are many reasons to choose this tropical paradise to spend your golden years. Of course, planning is a crucial aspect of relocating, and with that in mind, here are a few tips to make the transition a smooth experience.

  1. Take out health insurance – Search the web for the best medical health insurance in Thailand and check out their various packages. Hospitals are expensive and as we age, the chances of a medical issue rise; comprehensive health cover equals peace of mind and a secure online payment sees your policy activated. Google can help you find reputable insurance providers and read the client testimonials regarding claims; should the need arise and you have to have emergency surgery you want to be sure that the treatment can go ahead.
  2. Daily exercise – Now that you have time on your hands, make sure you do a daily workout; some take up yoga, which benefits you physically, mentally and spiritually. Watch a few YouTube videos that outline the basics of this eastern discipline and start by ordering a yoga mat and suitable clothing; that’s all you need to get started, join a local yoga class and you’ll make some new friends.
  3. Long-term land lease – If you are planning to spend the rest of your life in sunny Thailand, a 30×30 lease is ideal. Lease the land for a period of 30 years, with the option of a further 30 years; it should be noted that foreigners are not permitted to own land, which is why the long-term lease is the best way to secure your new home. Make sure to get an English-speaking Thai lawyer to read leasehold agreements and if all is agreed, you can start planning the build.
  4. Avoid processed food – Thailand is the garden of the world and wherever you decide to live, you have access to wholesome food, with organically grown fruits and vegetables in abundance. Sure, it’s OK to enjoy the odd hamburger and fries and with so many restaurants and a low cost of living, eating healthy is easy. You will, at some point, encounter durian, a rather pungent-smelling fruit and some say eating too much durian is harmful to your health.
  5. Annual health check-up – Most Thai hospitals can carry out comprehensive tests to determine your health status, which we recommend on an annual basis. For the small cost, it brings you peace of mind to know that your heart and other vital organs are in good shape and it is good to get a heads-up if something is amiss.

One thing you won’t lack is Vitamin D, which is found in sunlight and by living a healthy Thai lifestyle, you can enjoy an active life in a beautiful country.
